absences
Students are responsible for making up any work missed during an absence. Work that was ASSIGNED on the day of an absence will be assigned the day of return and students will be given the amount of time corresponding to the particular assignment to submit the work. Work that was DUE on the day of an absence is due the day the student returns to school. Note: If a student misses class due to a band sectional absence, they are still considered present at school and are responsible for submitting work due on the due date and completing any work assigned. *In the event of prolonged absence due to COVID-19 a make-up plan will be made that is fair and acceptable to all stakeholders
late work
Assignments are given by teachers for practice, reinforcement, and application of skills. We expect students to complete all assigned work and turn it in on time. **LATE HOMEWORK POLICIES VARY BY SUBJECT, SEE BELOW.

First semester Homework may be turned in one day late for half of the credit earned. Thereafter it will not be accepted. Second Semester Homework will not be accepted after the date it is due without an excused absence. If it is turned in before the end of the school day it is due, but not at the start of the class period, it will receive partial credit. Anything after that will not be accepted.

the 3 r's - respect, responsibility, ready for class
The 3 R’s were established to enhance the learning environment and enable all students to achieve success. Each teacher’s classroom rules are based upon these principles and consequences will apply to those students who choose not to honor them.
agenda books/i.d.'s
Students at HMS will be issued agenda books. These books are provided to help you keep track of important dates and assignments. You must carry these agenda books with you to all of your classes as your passes to leave a classroom are in these books, and this is monitored closely for your safety. Students must have ID badges to check out books from the media center.
advisory
Advisory programs promote students feeling “connected” to responsible and caring adults. At HMS, advisory is a 20-minute period scheduled at the beginning of each day. Team 8Black advisory activities for this year will focus on student involvement.
purses/bags
Students WILL be allowed to carry a bag from class to class.
bullying
Student safety and a positive learning environment are of utmost importance at Highland Middle School. We encourage parents, students, & community members to "Take a Stand" and address the issue of bullying in school. Click the tab to the right to report an issue.
TARDIES
|
Tardies...... Being tardy to class can greatly affect your learning. You must get to class on time in order to get the full benefit of the lesson each day. Team 8 Black defines an unexcused tardy as coming to class without a valid "excused" pass after instruction has started. HMS’s tardy policy is: 5 tardies/lates to class (all classes included) will result in serving 1 lunch DSR; two more tardies will result in another lunch DSR. If tardies continue to be an issue, other consequences can be administered (i.e. Saturday School, after school detentions, etc.) On Power School - UNEXCUSED tardies will be marked as "L"; EXCUSED will be marked as “T.”
